Find your group exemption number (GEN)
A group exemption number (GEN) is the four-digit number the IRS gives a group exemption. The whole group shares it: the central organization and every chapter it covers.

Where to find it
- The group exemption letter. The IRS letter that granted the group exemption usually shows the GEN.
- A group return. If the central organization files a group return on Form 990, the GEN goes in item H(c) of the header (Form 990).
- The IRS roster file. The GROUP column of the IRS EO BMF extract holds the GEN for every organization in a group. See how to read it.
- If you are a chapter officer: ask your central office. Some federations print the GEN in their chapter handbook or treasurer’s guide.
